Dear Wordperfect and/or LaTeX user,
In january the WP2LaTeX program was released from Eindhoven
University of Technology. Unfortunately the original
documentation was in Dutch. There is no english version available.
However, this shouldn't be to big a problem. In short, this is
summary of what the original documentation is about. In this translation
I sometimes refer to some pictures form the original documentation, so
please use this translation as well as the original documentation.
1. Introduction
The program tries to make a projection from the world of
wordprocessing (Wordperfect) to the world of typesetting (LaTeX).
This implicates that certain rules should be taken into
consideration when making a document using Wordperfect.
2. What is being converted and what is not
converted :
- hard return (hard line break)
- hard page break
- typefaces:
- extra big
- ...
- very small
- superscript
- subscript
- italics
- small caps
- boldface
- underscore
- double underscore
- some extended characters
- overstrike
- tabs (left, right, center)
- jump right (Alt F6)
- parallel columns (fixed position decimal colon)
- indenting (left, left and right)
- footnotes
- headers en footers
- position pagenumber
- justification on/off
Not being converted:
- margin settings
- newspaper-style columns
- line spacing
- top- and bottom margins
- index
- references
- end-notes
- table of contents
- grafical images
3 Guidelines
3.1 Tabbing
Never allow a line containing [Tab]'s to be broken by a soft return
( [ZRt] in the Dutch version of Wordperfect, [SRt] in the English
one I assume).
If you use accents in a tabbing-environment, be aware of the fact
that wp2latex doesn't convert these accents correctly. Normally accents
are made by \', \` and \=, but in a tabbing-environment these
commands have another definition. They should be replaced by
\a`, \a` en \a= respectively. The maximum number of tabs LaTeX
can handle is 14. Wordperfect can handle 40 tabs on one line.
So don't use more than 14 tabs.
3.2 Indenting
There are 3 options that can be converted:
[Indent]* One paragraph that may [SRt]
be spread over several lines [SRt]
and must be ended by a hard return. [HRt]
label [Indent]* A label (some text) may be put [SRt]
in front of a paragraph. [HRt]
[Indent]* label [Indent]* The label itself may be indented [SRt]
so that we have 2 indentation [SRt]
levels. [HRt]
[Indent]* means one or more than one [Indent] (F4)
By [SRt] I mean a soft line break (soft return). I am not shure
that I'm using the right translations because I don't use an
English version of Wordperfect.
3.3 Combinations of tabs en indenting.
You should not mix tabbing and indentation when you plan on using
this conversion program. This is because these 2 things are
completely different in the world of LaTeX, although this
distinction is hard to make for a Wordperfect user.
3.4 Footnotes
Within a footnote only hard returns and typeface-changes (section 2)
will be converted. A footnote-number may only contain digits.
When using footnotes within a line containing tabs, the footnote
will not be put at the bottom of the page. This is a LaTeX-bug.
3.5 Headers and footers
Only typefaces will be converted. The header/footer may be split
into 3 parts. A left part, a centered part and a right part
(see figure 1). Use Shft F6 for centering and Alt F6 for the
right part.
3.6 Page number posotions
The positions shown in figure 2 will be converted.
3.7 Wordperfect defaults
The left margin of the converted document will be 1 inch. Therefor
the program assumes that the Wordperfect left-margin is also 1 inch
and not being changed in the document. The default tab-settings will
be set on every inch.
It can be tricky not to follow the above guideline because in LaTeX
the tab-setting is relative to the left margin, whereas in
Wordperfect these two are independent (see figure 3).
3.8 Spaces
Normally LaTeX ignores more than one space, and treats them like there
was only one space. Because many Wordperfect users use the spacebar
for lay-outing, obsolete spaces will be converted into tildes (~) and
therefor not be ignored.
4 The program
I think this section is clear without further translation. The first line
of the converted document will always be:
\documentstyle[11pt,wp2latex]{report}
where wp2latex.sty is a style-file that should be used when LaTeX-ing
a converted document. It contains some macros like \nwln.
5 Finally
A 100 percent correct conversion can not be guaranteed. In most cases
the converted document will need some modification in order to
get the best results.
Because the sources are included (Turbo Pascal 5.0) you should be able to
modify the program when you want to convert Wordperfect 5.1 documents,
provided you know what file formats are being used by Wordperfect.
The file formats we used for our program, we found in the WordPerfect
5.0 Developer's Toolkit. I would assume that there exists such a toolkit
for version 5.1 of Wordperfect. Because 5.0 documents are compatible with
5.1 documents (are they ?) it shouldn't be such a big deal. Of course
you shouldn't try to convert the new 5.1 formula's because they are
treated as graphical images as I understood (at this moment I don't
use version 5.1).
I hope this short translation will help you using the wp2latex-program.
If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask them.
Sincerely,
Ron Helwig
